A video posted on TikTok by foreign content creators travelling across Malaysia received the ire of netizens recently after they showed themselves standing by the road in Perak trying to hitchhike to their next destination.
The video, shared by foreign travel content creator miquelrudy received negative comments from Malaysians, who criticised them for not planning their travels properly and relying on hitchhiking to move around.
Foreign travel content creators trying to hitchhike to Gerik, Perak
In the video, 1 of 2 travel content creators stood by the roadside at an undisclosed location believed to be in Perak while holding a sign saying ‘Gerik’.
Based on the conversation between the 2, they were heading to Gerik, which is around 55km away from where they were.
The person holding the sign then said that hitchhiking is easy and they would have no problems getting a ride.
The camera then panned to show the road as well as clouds gathering above them, signalling rain was expected soon.
The person recording then said that they didn’t have a place to stay where they were, though they might have 1 option, which was a bit expensive.
Despite waiting for around 1 minute, no one stopped to give them a ride, with the video ending after several vehicles passed them by.
However, in a follow-up video, the 2 foreign travellers did end up getting a ride from a passerby to Gerik.

Meanwhile, another commenter said that they faced this problem because they travelled without money, to which the content creators said that they had no problem hitchhiking.
Besides that, one commenter said that this is the foreigners’ trick to save some money as Malaysians are too kind and will always help out.
Another commenter told the foreigners to use public transportation in Malaysia, to which they simply replied that taking public transport is ‘boring’.
