Food itself is a “language” that brings everyone together. Without the need to share the same mother tongue, everyone has their own way of telling how much they enjoy the food, and over the years, many dishes have been reinvented with new additional ingredients.
A food critic recently got to try the Pork Nasi Kandar at a restaurant in Damansara, PJ. Similarly, the Nasi Kandar comes with gravy and multiple dishes but this time, a pork dish is also available, which was also served with Nasi Lemak. The food critic dubbed the meal “a porkfection!”
Little did she know, her review of the Pork Nasi Kandar got a little more attention than she expected.
Before we go further, we shall note that the food there is clearly non-Halal, as stated in the caption of the video.
“It’s an insult, it’s a confusion!”
The Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Entrepreneurs Association (PRESMA) is NOT happy about the influencer’s review of the meal that came with pork dishes, saying it’s an insult to the Nasi Kandar industry. The President of the organisation, Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan said that it may cause confusion to fans of Nasi Kandar, and other customers.
“It’s going to paint this menu in a negative way to others,” Datuk Jawahar added.
In the meantime, PRESMA also urged all content creators to be more sensitive and take into account the food that has always been associated with Muslims. The organisation also assured all Nasi Kandar enthusiasts that all Nasi Kandar restaurants registered with them are certified Halal.
Nasi Kandar with pork dishes may be new but Pork Nasi Lemak, or even Pork Satay has been around for quite some time, and, of course, these menus are catered to non-Muslims. Regardless, to our non-Muslim friends, have you heard of Pork Nasi Kandar, or you have given it a try?
