Asam pedas is a popular dish in Malaysia, especially in Melaka. However, a well-known restaurant was recently shut down after customers horrifyingly found maggots in the dish.
Just last month (June 2018), a customer visited a restaurant specialising in Asam Pedas in Kota Laksamana, Melaka and shockingly discovered maggots on the fish and “swimming” in the kuah. Eeww!
The customer was so disgusted they decided to take a video and upload it on Facebook, which needless to say, went viral. It was understood that the customer did complain to the restaurant owner on the spot but the complaint was not taken seriously.
China Press reported that the owner only said the “problematic” dish would be free of charge and didn’t even apologise to the customer. That’s not how you deal with customer’s complaint!

After watching the video, fellow netizens were horrified and some speculated that the fish was cooked separately and the kuah was only added in upon order. That’s probably how the flies were able to lay eggs on the fish.
“This shop used to sell very delicious Asam Pedas, and the kuah was very thick. The fish used to be fresh and not smelly. However, things have changed and I’ve stopped eating there for years,” a netizen said.
The Ministry of Health ordered the restaurant to shut down for two weeks after receiving complaints from the public. They said that they will only allow the restaurant to resume operations once they are satisfied with the cleanliness of the premise. Good job!
So don’t play with your phones while eating guys, pay attention on what you put into your mouth, even if you’re dining at a famous restaurant! You wouldn’t want to have some additional “protein” inside your food, do you?
