Learning a new language is an adventure that opens doors to diverse cultures, people, and experiences. Polyglots and linguists alike have always held a special place in our hearts, astonishing us with their ability to effortlessly communicate in multiple languages.
That was the case for a Malaysian man named Azrey, @azreykun18 who took the internet by storm with TikTok videos showcasing his fluency in nine languages.
Azrey’s language extravaganza begins with Bahasa Sungai, a local language spoken by a specific community. He predicts that within the next few decades, this beautiful language may face the threat of extinction due to its dwindling number of speakers.
Intriguingly, Azrey’s linguistic collection extends to Spanish. With a hint of excitement in his voice, he confesses to having learned Spanish through online resources, particularly YouTube, and the popular TV series “Money Heist”.
Russian becomes the next conquest in Azrey’s linguistic journey. While he humbly admits that he is still improving his proficiency, his confidence shines through as he expresses his fondness for Turah Parthayana videos.
“Yes I can speak a little Russian too but I’m still not good, I love to watch Turah Parthayana videos.”
Azrey then exhibits his mastery of English with perfect tonations, reflecting years of dedicated learning. English, being a global language, holds immense significance as a means of cross-cultural communication.
Having studied in a Chinese school, Azrey effortlessly transitions to Mandarin, a language he speaks daily with his friends. Mandarin, with its intricate characters and tonal complexities, has become increasingly popular due to China’s global influence.
Japanese takes centre stage as Azrey reveals his love for anime, mentioning popular series like “One Piece”, “Naruto” and “Demon Slayer”. The Japanese language, known for its unique writing system and cultural nuances, captivates the hearts of fans worldwide.
Despite being a beginner in Korean, Azrey impressively introduces himself in the language. Korean, with its melodious intonation and distinctive writing system, has gained widespread popularity due to the global phenomenon of Korean pop culture.
Azrey’s language range further expands to include Indonesian, the beloved language of our neighbour, Indonesia. Through his exposure to Indonesian YouTubers such as Fiki and Turah, Azrey has acquired a modest command of the language. This linguistic connection demonstrates the power of media and personal interests in language learning and strengthens the bond between neighbouring nations.
Lastly, Azrey’s native tongue, Malaysian language, takes the spotlight. Growing up in Peninsula Malaysia after being born in Sabah, Azrey effortlessly switches to the Semenanjung slang.
Azrey, in an interview with WORLD OF BUZZ, shared his linguistic journey.
From Sabah to Johor at age 7, he grew up speaking Sungai, his parents’ language. In Johor’s Chinese primary school, he learned Mandarin and English. In secondary school, he hosted students from Japan and overcame language barriers. This ignited his passion for languages.
During his diploma studies, Azrey surrounded himself with international students from Spain, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Korea. Intrigued, he learned Spanish and Russian through online platforms, gaining confidence in just three months. Currently, he focuses on learning Korean for his love of K-dramas.
