Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Permai in Bayan Baru, Penang, has made the country proud when they were successfully listed in the 10 best schools under the category of innovation through the World Best School Prizes (WBSP) 2023.
According to a report by Berita Harian, the prestigious education award organised by T4 Education based in the United Kingdom (UK) involved thousands of schools from around the world and offered cash prizes amounting to US$50,000 (RM230,875.00) for the first place winner.
The Headmaster of SK Seri Permai, Mohammad Sabarullah Shaik Ismail shared that his school is experimenting with the innovation of tables and book storage spaces, known as the Smart and Easy Table (SnET) 2.0, where he was inspired to solve the problem of heavy school bags.
“At the initial stage, our school was shortlisted as the 5 best schools in the country to represent Malaysia in the WBSP for the category of innovation and we received quite positive feedback from the organisers during the judging session,”
“This smart desk has been in use since 2020 in stages and so far, 800 desks have been modified into SnET 2.0 equipped with drawers and mini shelves that are locked, which is the first of its kind in the country,” he said.
The SnET 2.0 desks were developed in collaboration with students from the Institut Kemahiran MARA (IKM) Sungai Petani, Kedah at a cost of around RM100 per unit, compared to the market price of RM400.
It is also current in the process of patent registration.
