Currently, Muslims across the globe are observing the spiritual month of Ramadan. This auspicious month, which sees devotees fasting for the entire period, will officially come to an end in April, with the celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. With this in mind, many Malaysians are already making plans to manage their leave for the upcoming festivities – and honestly, why not?
In a recent TikTok video shared by a Shell service station in Sungai Nibong to their page @shellsgnibong, 2 employees, a man and a woman, partook in the most adorable exchange, when they decided to play a game of rock, paper, scissors, to decide who would be working the morning shift on the 1st day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Standing calm and going for an initial round, the duo first tied by both making the rock sign with their fists. Trying once more, they were neck and neck again by both choosing the paper sign. With encouragement from a colleague in the background of the clip, the duo seemed anxious as ever, as they knew this streak would soon come to an end, and one of them would prevail victorious.
After mustering some courage, the duo played the round once more time, with the man emerging as the winner, drawing a paper sign to his colleague’s rock sign. The video concluded with the man celebrating momentarily, while the woman light-heartedly groaned in frustration.
Garnering a massive response online, many Malaysians were amused by the employees’ interaction. One user even voiced her concern, wondering why both staff members would have to work during Hari Raya.
Despite that, multiple users stated that this is a very normal practice of working life, and that companies may not want to deny their staff from taking leave, but it is of necessity for that period of time.
“When I worked in retail, it was the same as this! We’d rush in the morning because when you take the morning shift, you end early, and at night you can celebrate Raya for a longer time,” commented one user.
Others even gave out general advise, informing people who are single and possess no commitments in their personal life to take on said responsibility in replacement of those with families.
Nonetheless, multiple individuals couldn’t help but make jests at the humorous situation, with one user even telling the employee who lost the game to take medical leave on that day itself.
“This is why I only look for work after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, then my life will be peaceful,” jested another user.
