A Malaysian woman reportedly lost RM5,000 to scammers after following instructions given to her via WhatsApp to download an application to purchase Nyonya gao (Nyonya pastries).
The Head of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department for IPD Barat Daya in Penang, ASP Devan Raman, took to his TikTok account to share further details about this incident while speaking directly with the victim.

Baffled by the situation, he told her, “I’m really sorry to ask this, but I have to ask. You want to buy kuih (pastries), even kuih, why are you buying online?”
It started with a link to a WhatsApp chat
This whole situation began when the woman clicked a link on Facebook that redirected her to a WhatsApp chat. There, she had engaged in a video call with an individual who provided her with instructions on downloading an application where she could ‘place orders for pastries’.
After installing the application, she noticed that it had linked her smartphone to other devices.
Feeling that something was wrong, the woman requested to use her daughter’s laptop to open her banking account, only to discover that RM5,000 had been withdrawn.
She was not the only victim

According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, an elderly person had lost RM3,000 to the scam, which uses Facebook advertisements of Nyonya pastries to lure in victims.
