A police officer who was in custody was found dead at the Perlis Correctional Centre in Gua Nangka yesterday (May 26). The 28-year-old man, who is from Setiu, Terengganu, was found unconscious while in his cell by a guard at around 4:30pm.
According to a report by Berita Harian, the Arau District Police Chief, Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi, shared that his department received information in regards to this incident at about 5:25pm.

“He was ordered to appear at the Kangar Magistrate’s Court at 8am yesterday to attend his trial, but he refused to do so. The victim, who was in his cell, was visited every hour by the guard on duty, and during each visit, he was just quiet while lying in bed,”
“At 4:30pm, the patrolling guard tried to wake him up as he was assumed to be sleeping, but found that he was no longer moving and immediately ordered the victim to be taken to the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) Kangar. At 5:10pm, the hospital confirmed that he had died before arriving at the hospital,” he said.
A police report regarding the death of the prisoner was made at 5:25pm.
A police officer with a psychiatric record
He, who was a member of the Perlis Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) with the rank of Lans Corporal, was in custody for an offence under Section 302 of the Penal Code for the past 2 years.

“The victim had been remanded at the Perlis Correctional Centre in Guar Nangka since March 17, 2023, and is awaiting sentencing by the High Court in Kangar,” Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin explained.
He also has a psychiatric record from being referred to several hospitals since 2017.
Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin added that no criminal elements were found that could point to the cause of his death.
“The body was taken to the Forensic Department of the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for a post-mortem,” he said.
Back in 2023, the deceased was accused of murdering his wife in Kamping Bendang Baru, Simpang Empat, Kangar, between 6:45am and 8:50am.
