With 12.12 ending recently, surely a lot of us have probably emptied our carts and are now just waiting eagerly by our doors for our packages to get delivered. However, instead of just caring about your products, you have to make sure that the packaging your product came in is disposed of properly.
A video went viral on social media yesterday (14 December) where a scammer obtains a person’s private information from the discarded delivery package. Using that, the scammer starts calling and harassing the customer, demanding for money. Not only that, but the scammer also visits the person’s house disguising as a delivery worker and asked for COD payment for a fake product.
Responding to this, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Zainuddin Yaacob said in a statement that to further convince their victims, the scammer will use the method like an original package delivery worker where they were reportedly even told to scan a barcode before they could accept the ordered item.
“Even though the police has not received any complaints of such cases, investigations will be conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code which states that a ten-year prison sentence and caning will be carried out for such offences.”
Datuk Zainal reminded the public to always carefully dispose of any envelope or packaging that contains your personal information. If you’re expecting any packages delivered to your house, make sure to inform your family members of the delivery company and the payment statuses. He added that NEVER perform a cash-on-delivery payment unless you’ve got a confirmation from the person that made the order.
“If you’ve been a victim by a scam with this modus operandi, make sure to lodge a police report to warrant further investigation,” he said.
Let this be a reminder to us to not only pay attention to the product inside but also to the packaging outside!
