Over the weekend (14th July), CCTV footage of a man harassing a young girl at a local convenience store prompted outrage when it began to circulate on social media.
The incident, which reportedly happened at a shop in Bandar Country Homes in Rawang last Wednesday (10th July), is currently being investigated by the authorities.
In an update on this case, Gombak District Police Chief Asst Comm Samsor Maarof announced in a statement that the man, a 45-year-old Indonesian national, was arrested yesterday (15th July). He was quoted by Sinar Harian as saying,
“Acting on information disclosed to us, we successfully caught the suspect in Bandar Country Homes. The suspect’s clothes that he wore during the incident have also been confiscated.”
“Early investigations confirm that the suspect was involved in the incident. He works as a construction worker and does not possess any identification documents.”
A remand order will also be requested in court today (16th July) for this case to be investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
The 51-second CCTV footage which went viral on social media showed a young girl with another, younger child believed to be her sibling shopping at a convenience store when the suspect made sexual advances towards her.
The male suspect can be seen hugging and groping the young girl from behind, prompting the young girl and her sibling to run away. The girl’s father filed a police report shortly after the incident.
Let’s hope the police thoroughly investigate this case and ensure that the well-being of the children involved is prioritised.
