The Kuala Lumpur Police Chief confirmed today (January 8) that a total of 182 police reports have been lodged against Hannah Yeoh over her book – Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey.
The book, which was published 11 years ago in 2014, is said to be a move to “spread Christianity” and turn Malaysia into a Christian country.
At the time of writing, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa also said that 59 statements have been recorded, but the authorities have yet to record Hannah Yeoh’s statement, reported Astro Awani.
Previously, several Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), including Pertubuhan Kebajikan Darul Islah Malaysia (PERKID) and the Malaysia Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) lodged a police report against the Minister of Youth & Sports on the grounds of “posing dangers against national security.”
They also urged the Malaysian National Security Council (MKN) to ban the publication of the book. Last month, Hannah Yeoh said that her book has been reprinted 18 times without any issues, and MKN has not said anything about banning her book.
In a recent interview which she shared on her Facebook page, Hannah said Becoming Hannah is merely about her life journey into the world of politics, and dubbed the accusations that her book was a “move to spread Christianity” as defamation.
In another statement by Hannah Yeoh herself, which was shared last year, Hannah highlighted her respect towards the Federal Constitution and the position of Islam as the religion of the Federation.
“As has occured many times in my political career, my faith has again become political fodder by religious extremists.”
“I urge all parties to stand firm against these attempts and not spread the messages when they see them online.”
