When it comes to giving birth, time is of the essence as there is a rush to take the mother to the hospital to ensure that she is able to do so somewhere safe and comfortable.
However, at times, there is simply not enough time.
This was recently seen in the case of an Orang Asli woman who delivered twins whilst on a boat in Perak.
The story was shared by the Perak Health Department on its official Facebook page on 18 January.

The post says, “15 January, 2022 is a historic moment for the health staff of Pos Kemar Clinic consisting of Medical Officers, Health Nurses, Community Nurses and Health Care Assistants who successfully celebrated the birth of twins on an ambulance boat at Lake Banding.”
“The incident occurred during an attempt to bring a 31 -year -old Orang Asli mother who was 35 weeks pregnant, to Gerik Hospital after she was diagnosed with labour pains by a community nurse who visited her home,” said the post.
“With the quick action of health workers, the mother safely gave birth to twins weighing 2.4 kg and 1.3 kg. They have been referred to Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) Ipoh, for follow up treatment. May the mother and her two babies be healthy and safe. Thank you to the boat driver on duty.”
Pos Kemar is an Orang Asli village in Gerik where boats are their main mode of transport. It normally takes two hours to reach Gerik Hospital by land or water.
Pos Kemar Clinic Midwifery Nurse, Nur Shaffriza Mohd Shaffril said, “On the way to the hospital, the woman said that she wanted to push, and when examined, it was found that one of the baby’s head was already visible.”
She added that although she was used to celebrating the birth of a baby, the process of the twins’ birth was different because it was done while the boat was moving.
“Despite feeling anxious, we are thankful that the birth process went smoothly.”
