The announcement that Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh has taken home the Best Actress award at the Academy Awards has made headlines globally.
Apart from going viral, it has even started a ‘claim war’ between Malaysia and other countries.
However, it seems that Yeoh’s win was not the only thing being talked about.
In a snippet posted by Buletin TV3 on their official Facebook page, it turned out that the presenters, Halle Berry and Jessica Chastain, had their entire bodies blurred out with only their faces clearly visible.
This sparked confusion as netizens were left wondering why the television channel had to go through such resort. Malaysians have since shared images and screenshots of the censored video and image on social media.
The need for it?
Netizens were quick to comment and share their thoughts on the matter.
Many joked about how this was an issue of “dress codes” following the slew of recent issues surrounding dress codes.
“Not just government buildings okay. Even censoring women’s dress on public TV in case it gets shown in a government building.”
One user jokingly said, “Yeah, because have to follow the hospital’s dress code.”
Meanwhile, others criticised the television station for what they assumed was unnecessary censorship.
“The censoring is making the actresses (look) even more inappropriate than they originally were.”
Another user pointed out they hypocrisy they appear to be practicising and asked why they don’t do the same for local dramas.
