It’s no secret that politicians have to put their best foot forward to create a good impression to the public, even if it means interacting with politicians from an opposing party!
In an interview with Malaysiakini, Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz shared that he had no problem with photos and videos of him hugging and holding hands with Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng being circulated on social media. He told the daily,
“It’s not romantic at all, it’s democratic… I am straight.”
He clarified that in Penang, the public would think more positively of him as he showed that he was on friendly terms with the chief minister.
“So sometimes I do that… When I go to Penang, it’s a DAP crowd. I have more to gain if we both decide to hug,” Nazri Aziz added.
On top of that, he mentioned that he has no problems hugging his colleagues in Barisan Nasional (BN). However, he added that nobody from the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) has ever approached him for a hug.
The two politicians reportedly have a good friendship, with the Tourism and Culture Minister acknowledging their cordial relationship. However, that does not mean that the two let each other off the hook.
Just recently, the tourism and culture minister made headlines for calling Malaysia’s richest man and influential businessman Robert Kuok a “pondan” (effeminate), while challenging him to come back from Hong Kong to run for the upcoming election.
These comments came in light of news alleging that the billionaire was funding opposition party DAP through his nephew, James. However, this rumour turned out to be untrue.
In response to this, the Penang Chief Minister called Nazri Aziz’s comments a personal attack that was uncalled for.
Well, it’s good to see two politicians from opposing sides getting along, especially with the upcoming general elections happening soon!
