With Ramadan ending in less than 10 days, a non-Muslim man in Sabah gets ready with his identification card (IC) on the dining table and jokingly remarks that he doesn’t want to get slapped for dining out.

In a viral Facebook post by Verdi Kornelis Omjai, who resembles a Malay-looking man, he explained that he did not do this for fun and not just in response to the recent viral slapping incident at a convenience store involving an uncle and a Chinese man.

“I was almost taken away in a white van”

In the comment section, the man who has been staying in KL for more than a decade now, explained that he had experienced firsthand what it was like to be misunderstood as a Muslim who skipped fasting.

“I was questioned almost every week when I was at the Chinese restaurants, or any restaurants.”

He explained, “I was almost taken away by the authorities in the white van but it was my fault too. When they said ‘Assalamualaikum’ (peace be upon you), I responded with a ‘Wa’alaikumsalam’ (peace be upon you too).

Verdi learnt the hard way, and as a precaution, he is always ready with his IC on the dining table.

“If a Chinese man could get slapped too, what about my face?” Verdi joked.

Verdi also joked that he thought of wearing a singlet when he dined out so that his tattoo would be visible, but eventually thought that it was not a good idea.

“People might mistake me as a gangster.”

What do you think of his experience?
