From making nearly indestructible phones to making a giant leap for mankind, Nokia has once again made its name the talk of the internet (though it’s been awhile).
Nokia announced on Monday (19 October) that they have been selected by NASA to build the first cellular network on the moon. The Finnish company announced this as the American space agency plans for human lunar settlements under the Artemis moon-landing program.
According to ABC, the telecommunications equipment manufacturer said it’s Nokia Bell Labs division will be building a 4G communications system to be deployed on the surface of the moon in late 2022.
Nokia will be partnering with a Texas-based private spacecraft design company in order to deliver the equipment to the moon. Transportation of the equipment will be handled by Intuitive Machines using their lunar lander.
After self configurations, the network will establish a 4G/LTE communication system on the moon. However, Nokia aims that it would eventually switch to 5G as reported by AsiaOne.
The network will provide astronauts with the capabilities of voice and video communications. The deployment and remote control of lunar rovers and other robotic devices will also be possible according to Nokia.
