Malaysian celebrity and activist Azlan Sani Zawawi, affectionately known as Lando Zawawi, recently took to Facebook to call out the Public Works Department (JKR) for the subpar work done on a road in Seri Iskandar, Perak.
Lando, who’s vocal about road safety in Malaysia, shared a photo of the work being done on the road, shockingly revealing that the workers were using house paint for the road markings.
JKR subcontractors using house paint for road markings
In the caption of the post, Lando called out the subcontractor hired by JKR to implement the road markings and revealed that the photo was taken on 13 August.
He then sarcastically asked how long they have been using paint meant for home walls.
Lando asserted,
“No wonder people complain about road markings fading easily. Please let us know who gave you the directive to use the house paint. We’ll have a good time condemning them.”
The post has since gone viral with over 1,600 reactions, prompting JKR to issue a reply.
JKR said the road markings were only temporary
In a statement, JKR Daerah Perak Tengah clarified that the road markings being done by the subcontractor as seen in the photo were only meant to be temporary.
The department added that the usage of the house paint is only for the stop road marking and was implemented because road users weren’t stopping at the traffic light as the previous road markings had faded.
JKR Daerah Perak Tengah stressed that the usage of house paint was only a temporary measure and that the permanent road markings would only be done in early September.
Lando was not convinced by JKR Daerah Perak Tengah’s statement
In a Facebook post responding to the statement, Lando dared the department to show which page of JKR Malaysia’s standard operating procedures (SOP) allows house paint to be used as temporary road markings.
Furthermore, he also said that usually, works done by the authorities that are allegedly temporary end up being permanent as there are no follow-ups.
Besides that, Lando also called out JKR Daerah Perak Tengah for limiting the comments section, essentially barring the public from leaving a comment.
