Malaysians love going to Thailand and Singapore as they are accessible by car or land transport.
In about 20 years, we might be able to travel to Indonesia via road as well!
On 8 September, Melaka Investment, Industry, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh talked about the development of a route to link Malaysia and Indonesia on the “Apa Khabar YB” programme with Melakafm.
It is said that this new route would either be a tunnel or a bridge and will start from Telok Gong, in Masjid Tanah, Melaka with the other end being Dumai, in Sumatra. This proposed route will have a distance of 120KM and will be developed with the cooperation of the private sector, reported BERNAMA.
Since this is a major project, it will be time-consuming and it is estimated to take about 20 years to complete. It will also have a huge impact on the economic development of both countries.
“The proposal on the project has been submitted by the private sector and both countries have in principle agreed to a detailed study on the matter.”
Adding to that, there are also many other components to this project such as traffic dispersal areas and the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex.
Ab Rauf continued by saying that Masjid Tanah will also be developed with an addition of a 2,023-hectare area housing various industrial activities.
Well, it certainly sounds like a good plan, but we’re not sure whether we’ll ever be able to use that route in our lifetime. What is your take on this?
