A jaw-dropping and mystical natural phenomenon was spotted in the sky above Chengdu, China recently, showing the city being illuminated by 7 ‘suns’!
The video, taken on 18th August, was shared on the Chinese social site Weibo and went viral in the country. It was reposted by many public social media accounts globally, including this post by Shanghai Daily on Facebook.
7 ‘suns’ appearing in the Chengdu sky
In the video, 7 ‘suns’ can be seen in the sky, including 1 behind the clouds, with all of them having different brightness intensities and colour temperatures.
According to a report by Dim Sun Daily HK, the video was recorded by a Chengdu resident who described seeing the phenomenon from multiple angles, even through glass.
The individual added that the mystical sight lasted about 1 minute, with many other onlookers witnessing it and recording a video of the phenomenon.

The optical illusion is caused by light refraction and reflection
Don’t be alarmed, 6 additional suns didn’t magically appear in our solar system temporarily, as the phenomenon can be associated with a common optical illusion caused by light refraction and reflection off layered glass.
Dim Sun Daily HK quoted Zeng Yang, Vice President of the Sichuan Society for Astronomy Amateur as saying that each layer of glass creates another virtual image and sometimes, even with the same pane of glass, the number of virtual images can vary depending on the viewing angles.
This was also consistent with how the multiple suns appear upright and dimmer from 1 ‘sun’ to the other.
