Recently, former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and subsequently charged with 4 counts of abuse of power and 2 counts of money laundering for alleged wrongdoings during his tenure.
Despite the charges against him, it appears that the support for him has been unwavering as politicians and members of the public have showed their support publicly for him.
In a speech on Saturday night (March 11), Muhyiddin shared some of the struggles he had to endure following the charges he faced.
Speaking at Perikatan Nasional’s ‘Solidariti Menentang Kezaliman’ event in Taman Melewar, Muhyiddin said that he had to borrow money to pay for the bail set by the Kuala Lumpur Session Court which was set at RM2 million.
Meanwhile, he also shared that he has since had trouble sleeping.
“Never in my life have I ever broken any law, not even a speeding ticket.”
“When I read (the news) about the charges, it was difficult to sleep. My wife also had difficulty sleeping. My children worry about me…that is normal,” he explained.
Muhyiddin then added, “Then I read that if convicted, the punishment is 20 years in jail and a fine. If the amount involved is RM200 million, I have to pay triple the amount, so what do you think I should be thinking?”
The Pagoh MP also said that he had to borrow money to pay the RM2 million bail set by the court as the fund raising efforts by the party were not enough to pay the bail resulting in him having to borrow money.
“Luckily, there were those who were willing to lend me the money, if not I will still be in jail. We will present our case in court and all I ask of you is for your prayers.”
