Most of you have already thought about what you’re going to do to celebrate the New Year since it’s not far off now! However, what some of you might not know is that not everybody has the privilege of getting a public holiday on 1st January. In fact, there are FIVE states in Malaysia who don’t have the first day of the year as a public holiday. Take note if you’re visiting these states during the New Year!

According to kabinet.gov.my, the five states that will still resume working AND schooling hours as per usual are:

  • Johor
  • Terengganu
  • Kedah
  • Kelantan
  • Perlis

So if you find yourself in these states on 1st January, you can expect to find businesses operating their usual hours as well as students heading to school at the very start of 2020. States that are unlisted will, fortunately, still have the day off.
