The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in banks waving the RM1 withdrawal fee for MEPS interbank ATM.
However, all this is set to change, much to the disappointment of Malaysians.
According to The Sun Daily, the RM1 fee for interbank ATM withdrawals will be revived in February 2022 and banks such Maybank, CIMB, Citibank, HSBC have confirmed the news.
It is to be noted that customers making withdrawals from the ATM machines of their respective banks would not be charged any withdrawal fees.
Netizens angry over the announcement
Malaysians took to social media to express their disapproval and anger over the news. Many pointed out that banks continued to do well financially even during the pandemic.
“It’s been two years that the ATM charge has been waived. Banks are still steadily profiting billions. What is the purpose of the return of the charge?” asked one user.
Another said, “Next year we will have to start looking for banks based on our respective cards. It is very troublesome if its urgent.”
“Why can’t banks just do away with this RM1 charge,” asked another.
“Banks already make billions of profits even during MCO when this charge was waived!”
The user then tagged Bank Negara and pleaded for them to reconsider the decision.
One user commented, “Interbank ATM transaction without RM1 was working just fine and the banks still functioning well and make good profits.”
“Maintain that please. RM1 might mean nothing to you.”
