Homestays have revolutionized the way we travel, offering opportunities to explore offbeat locations and experience life as a local. However, incidents of hosts installing hidden cameras have made travelers cautious about booking such vacation homes.

In a recent TikTok video by user @i.njw, she recounts a terrifying experience she and her friends had while traveling to Penang for 3 days and 2 nights.

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Ain shared how they initially noticed a random dehumidifier box in the toilet on the first day of their stay at the homestay. They didn’t think much of it at the time.

However, on the second day, after returning from a swim around 7:30pm, one of Ain’s friends discovered a camera in the toilet while taking a shower. She screamed to warn Ain and their other friend about the situation.

According to Ain’s friend, she shared her perspective by mentioning that while she was showering, she noticed something shiny on the dehumidifier box and saw a small hole.

“To confirm, my friend decided to check the box. She removed all the items inside and immediately spotted the camera, which was turned on. The camera screen displayed ‘Ready to connect/connected to wifi.'”

Ain shared that when her friend checked the camera, it appeared to be turned off but still warm. Concerned, they removed the batteries to prevent remote access.

“While we were packing to leave, an Indian man came to check on us. He took the camera, claiming it was for reporting purposes.”

Upon checkout, they went straight to the police station. The police called the man to come in, but he arrived without the camera. The police requested he retrieve it.

“We were asked to check the camera, but the SD card was missing,” Ain added. “The police suggested filing a report and indicated they would treat it as a sexual harassment case if there was progress.”

“We hope that by sharing our story, further investigation will occur to identify the culprit and raise awareness,” Ain concluded.
