Having a disability doesn’t define who you are. Some disabilities don’t stop people from working full-time or socializing, just like anyone else.
Armin (pseudonym) reached out to WORLD OF BUZZ to share his inspiring story of how he, as a disabled man, is still living his life to the fullest despite the challenges he is currently facing.
He was once an ordinary man doing ordinary things
Armin shared that he’s been in a relationship with his girlfriend for 7 years. He went on to explain that following his motorbike accident in 2017, he tragically lost a close friend and his right hand.
He mentioned that his right hand suffered nerve damage, making it completely unusable. He can only lift his shoulder now.
Even with all this, he mentioned he’s still able to write and drive using his left hand, thanks to some training. And on top of that, he also shared that his right leg is slightly shorter due to having undergone 5 surgeries.
Her family insulted him for being ‘different’
Armin went on to explain that one of the challenges he’s currently facing is how his girlfriend’s family has come to know about his disability.
The 26-year-old from Kedah claims that his girlfriend’s family expressed concerns, suggesting that because of his disability, he may not be capable of taking care of their daughter or leading a happy life with her.
“They’ve been making negative comments about my disability and suggesting that because of it, I’m not capable of living a happy life with her. Despite knowing about my condition, my girlfriend still chose to be with me.”
Armin pointed out that he never let his disability stop him from achieving things in his life. He’s now proud to own a house and car that he acquired through his own hard work.
“Can someone with a disability not love another person?”
Armin expressed how heartbroken he felt upon hearing the comments allegedly made by his girlfriend’s family.
“It’s shattered me completely. How does one overcome such a feeling? I feel worthless for being disabled. It’s making me suicidal to have to be treated this way.”
He then shared that even to this day, his girlfriend’s family is still unable to accept him as he is. He also claims that her family would have accepted him if he were “normal“.
“I didn’t choose to be disabled after the accident. I wasn’t even looking for a relationship right after it happened, but she insisted on being with me regardless of my condition. However, I’m someone who doesn’t give up on what I want to achieve.”
He concluded his story with advice, saying,
“Disabled people also have feelings and emotions. Everyone should respect them, value them, and show love towards them despite their conditions.”
