Just two weeks ago, a Malaysian woman was reportedly denied entry into a police station because she was “wearing shorts.” Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani had also stated that the police stations’ dress codes can only be overlooked if there is a “life or death” emergency.
Well, how do we know if it’s a life or death emergency? Recently, another Malaysian woman faced a similar problem when she claimed to have been denied entry into the ER Department of Kampar’s Hospital for wearing shorts.
Events that led the couple to the ER
According to Damien Chan who spoke to Nanyang Siang Pao, the incident happened early yesterday (February 13) morning. He was playing badminton with his good friend when the woman, who is his friend’s girlfriend suddenly complained of severe stomach pain while watching them from the sidelines.
The pain was so severe that the 21-year-old had difficulty walking so they decided to immediately drive her to the ER at Kampar Hospital.
“However, after filling out the required information at the counter, a medical assistant pointed out that it was impolite for the female victim to wear shorts, and that she had to change into long pants before entering,” Damien recounted of their experience at the hospital.
“In desperation, I had no choice but to drive back to the school hostel and get a pair of long pants for her. It was only then she allowed to go into the emergency room.”
Getting clarification
Feeling upset on behalf of his girlfriend, Damien’s friend later confronted the staff asking why his girlfriend was not allowed to enter in shorts, to which the latter just said that it’s against the hospital rules.
When he continued pressing the staff with questions, him and Damien were eventually kicked out for “not having manners.”
Damien and his friends has since filed a formal complaint via email to the hospital’s management.
On the female victim’s condition, Damien said that upon the doctor’s examination, it is suspected that his friend had menstrual cramps and high blood pressure. Otherwise, she is fine and was allowed to leave the hospital at 3am.
What if this was a life or death situation? The patient would’ve lost so much precious time waiting for Damien to go back and get her a change of long pants.
