Job interviews can be daunting at times, especially when your potential employers seem intimidating or pose tough questions that make you doubt you’re getting the job. At some time, you might need to disclose your salary at the previous workplace.

A Malaysian man, however, is not a fan of that part of the job interview. According to an anonymous post shared by local radio DJ Meiyan on her Facebook, the man disagreed with revealing how much he made in the past.

“I really don’t like it when HR wants to know my past salary. Out of politeness, I kindly told them my expected salary.”

The man revealed that he is in the midst of hunting for a new job after leaving his previous workplace with his bonus. It wasn’t his 1st time facing the same question from different HRs regarding previous salary but he still couldn’t understand the relevance behind the question.

“Why would they want to know how much I made in my previous workplace? Is it acceptable if I refuse to disclose that part of my last job during interviews?”

“HR has the right to do so”

Many of us might be able to relate to his situation but according to netizens, most believe that there is nothing much you can do. Like it or not, you will have to provide the documents the HR needs.

In other words, take it or leave it.

“This is something basic that you have to tell your potential new employers. Some companies need candidates to prepare the last 3 payslips from previous jobs, and this is just to look at their honesty.”

“You have to state this. HR has the right to demand your payslip from the last 3 months.”

“Are you trying to demand high pay and afraid your pay slip will betray you?”

“If you can’t provide the pay slips, it means you’re lying, don’t you think so?”

“If you’re skillful and talented, why are you so afraid of disclosing your past salary?”

What’s your “answer scheme” if you’re not comfortable with the question? To our readers who are working in the HR department, what’s your take on this?
