Just a couple of days ago, 2 foreign workers were arrested for allegedly attempting to kidnap a 1-year-old child at a supermarket in Klang.

While behind the child and her mother on an escalator in the supermarket, one of the foreign workers apparently picked up the little girl, causing her mother to panic and grab her child from the man. The duo then allegedly attempted to flee but was stopped by members of the public and handed over to the police.

But, how true is all of this?

In a press conference, Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan has revealed that it was all a misunderstanding as the foreign workers from Nepal were concerned for the child’s safety which led one of them to pick up the child. He revealed that the mother had allowed the child to walk up a broken escalator.

Kidnap 5

“We found that this case isn’t a kidnapping or attempted kidnapping case. What happened was that, I’ve seen the CCTV footage from 2 angles which shows the incident. When they (the Nepalese men) went to the supermarket where the 1-year-old child was with her mother, the escalator that went up to the floor above was spoilt.

“At the same time, these 2 Nepalese men, who are working in Malaysia legally, also wanted to head up to the floor above. They both work at a company nearby and are regular customers of the supermarket to buy their necessities. So, when they noticed the child was struggling to walk up (the spoilt escalator), they tried to help the child (by picking her up) without telling her mother,” he said.

Kidnap 6

Despite immediately handing the child to her mother upon seeing her panic, the mother thought it was an attempted kidnapping, which led to the men’s arrest.

The police also found that there were no preparations made for a kidnapping attempt as there were no vehicles waiting and no escape attempt was made by the Nepalese men.

“Maybe their habit in their home country is to pick up children without permission from their parents,” he added.

Now, Malaysians are condemning the mother for her actions of both allowing the child to walk on a spoilt escalator and accusing the 2 foreign men for attempting to kidnap her daughter

They also pointed out that this is an example of why people shouldn’t help others and mind their own businesses.

Kidnap 1

“The mother is also stupid for letting her 1-year-old child to walk on an escalator by herself. Carry her lah, carry her.”

Kidnap 2

“What kind of parents would tell their 1-year-old child to walk up a spoilt escalator on their own? No wonder the foreigners tried to help carry her but ended up getting accused of kidnapping.”

Kidnap 3

“This is why I think 10 times before helping someone else. People these days are different. So, it’s okay, I’ll do my own thing. Mind my own business. Only when people ask for help will I help.”

Kidnap 4

“Nowadays we should become more selfish and individualistic. Just wear earphones and mind our own business, because if we interfere to help, people will get angry and make accusations against us.”

While it is understandable to want to help, but perhaps the foreigners should have spoken to the child’s mother first before picking her up.
