Angpow is merely a symbol of blessing and sincerity. If you’re expecting to make some money through the red packets, you’re going to end up disappointed if the amount matters that much to you.
A Malaysian and a mixed rice vendor, Hong is still giving out Angpow this year, but there’s a little change. In his Xiao Hong Shu (RED) post @吃货小哥哥, he revealed that instead of banknotes, his Angpow comes with wishful messages and he is frank about the reason for that.
“I’m not doing well financially this year, and I can’t afford to prepare lots of Angpow this year. Regardless of the amount, people are still going to spill their negativity.”
“Everything is rising, but not my sales”
In his post, Hong admitted that as a mixed rice vendor, he is struggling with the rising price of goods and he can’t blindly increase the price of his food.
“I’m not making as much as past year. If I give RM100 of Angpow to 10 kids, that’s RM1000 gone.”
Hong sees it fit to insert wishful notes in Angpow, a substitute for the banknotes because he believes that not everyone is after the money on this festive season.
“I’m using this method this year, and hopefully the recipients will be happy with the wishful notes. A sincere wish is, after all, priceless.”
In the picture above, the note says,
“I can’t afford to give Angpow cash this year due to the economic situation. I replaced it with a wishful note, hoping that business would boom for everyone with a lot of fortune, as well as staying happy with their family.”
Do people like it?
In a brief conversation with WORLD OF BUZZ, Hong said the reception for his wishful notes in red packets has been overwhelmingly good so far.
“The response has been very positive.”
Hong also told WORLD OF BUZZ that he wished others would understand that some people are struggling, and are not able to come up with fancy Angpows.
“Some things can’t be bought with money, just like a sincere wish.”
Hong’s honesty and sincerity are truly admirable! It’s much better and wiser to do something you can’t afford just to eventually end up in debt. To those who are not doing well financially, what do you say about this method?
