Recently the country was taken by surprise by the resignation of our beloved Yang di-Pertuan Agong and a lot of Malaysians took to the internet to voice their opinions on the matter. While most of us were saddened by the news, some individuals took time to insult the king instead.
Leon Lee wrote a piece in regards to the King, the Constitutional Monarchy, loyalty to the King, and why all Malaysians should go back to the Rukun Negara as a guide so that we can move forward as a united country.
He explained that in a Constitutional Monarchy, where the Prime Minister is the advisor to the King, each law created or to be amended must be signed and approved by the King (except when it doesn’t) as well as the King holding the position of Commander in Chief which means he is the ultimate leader of the armed forces. He said,
“You may not like the system, or that you are a Republican at heart where you prefer a President instead of a King (like Singapore). You may not care for the monarchy, or you prefer a Theocracy (where the country is ruled by a religious cleric, like Iran.”
He also highlighted that Malaysians do have the right to change the system if they feel that the current one is not suitable for them, but as long as the current system is still in place, then everyone should adhere to it. He continued saying that there is also an option to migrate to another country too if the Constitutional Monarch is unfavourable to some.
He added,
“So as long as you are in Malaysia, you will love our King and the other 8 rulers because he is your King and they are your Sultans.”
