Years ago, a Malaysian man ventured into the world of shady business in pursuit of easy money, only to face a total downfall followed by deep regret.
His journey began in the underground gambling scene through illegal lotteries. At first, his role was simple: he helped collect bets, recorded customers’ numbers, and passed the money to his boss. In return, he earned a small commission for each bet placed. The income was modest but steady, and life seemed manageable.

Eventually, his boss encouraged him to take on a more significant role known as “吃字”. Under this system, if customers lost their bets, he kept the money as profit. However, if the numbers won, he was responsible for paying out the winnings himself. Initially, luck appeared to be on his side. Winning numbers were rare, and the money flowed in quickly.
Within a year, he had saved his first RM100,000.
A cycle of collapse
Everything changed in a single day. A number was drawn that triggered both the first and second prizes simultaneously. The amount he owed reached around RM120,000, and in an instant, his savings vanished. Although his boss helped cover part of the loss, the experience left him starting from zero.
Still chasing a chance at recovery, he later joined an online gambling operation offering games like Baccarat and Roulette. For a short time, the business seemed promising. Then, within a single week, players managed to win approximately RM50,000, leaving him once again buried in debt.
He eventually left the gambling scene to try his hand at another illicit venture. This time, he accepted a management role at a nightclub-style KTV venue. He handled customers, hostesses, and payments, believing this was his opportunity to rebuild his life.

However, not long after, the venue was raided by immigration and enforcement officers. He was detained for a month.

A hard-earned lesson
That experience changed his mind forever. He realised that peace of mind is worth far more than money.
Today, he lives quietly, carrying the weight of his regrets. He warns that the “glamorous” life people imagine hides debts, risks, and the constant threat of losing everything. For him, the price of chasing easy money was far greater than he ever expected.
“If I could start over, I would rather work an honest job and earn slowly. At least I could sleep peacefully without worrying about what might happen tomorrow,” he wrote in a post.
To him, true peace of mind is worth far more than fast cash.
