We all know the stress that comes with moving especially if you’re moving during a pandemic. The chaos of packing and unpacking, the amount you need to spend to buy new furniture, essential items and decor items… ah, it’s stressful just thinking about it!
In the midst of all that, sometimes we tend to forget a few important things that we need for our new home and we don’t want the added stress! So we spoke to these Malaysian homeowners about 5 things they didn’t know were so important to have before moving in:
1. An air-conditioner that fits the room you’ll be putting it in
Your air-con’s efficiency depends heavily on the space it’ll be in so make sure to do adequate research before purchasing this big-ticket item.
The basic rule of thumb is that the bigger the space is, the higher the cooling capacity. You should also consider the amount of heat exposure that the room gets during the day to determine the horsepower of your air conditioner.
- If your living area is between 200 to 400 sqft, then you’d need an air conditioner with 1.0 to 1.5 horsepower
- But if you have a larger area that gets more sunlight and heat exposure, then you’d need to get an air conditioner with 2.0 horsepower and above!
2. Check thoroughly if any damages need to be fixed
It’s also really important to know your rights as a homeowner or renter. If you’re inspecting a new home, you have 24 months to check for defects under the Defect Liability Period. If you find any defects within that timeframe, the developer is obligated to fix them for you at no cost whatsoever. If you’re renting a home, it’s equally as important to check thoroughly as you don’t want the landlord to blame you for any damages caused!
- In the property listing, make sure to check if the kitchen or toilet looks dark, old and mouldy
- Upon inspection, check the areas that weren’t in the listing such as the pipes below the sink, the cupboard below the stovetop
- If it’s a brand new property, make sure to check on your plumbing and drainage systems for any leakage or clogged drains.
3. Instant water heater for your hot showers
There’s nothing worse than having to shower with blistering cold water in the morning (unless you’re one of those who likes cold showers…). While some apartments do have a built-in water heater in the toilets, most do not so here are a few things you can do to check:
- Give your management a call and check with them before you move in
- If a built-in water heater is not included, make sure to ask them if it’s alright for you to install an instant water heater
- Check the water pressure in your new toilet to determine if you should get a water heater with a pump or without a pump (the pump helps with low water pressure!)
Make sure you do your due diligence and check beforehand as it may cost you between RM300 to RM500 just to install one!
4. The correct pipes for your washing machine, stovetop & sink
Not only is it incredibly dangerous to have incorrect pipes (read: gas leak), it can also be super expensive to have them replaced if they’ve caused some damage to your home. While most home appliances such as washing machines and stovetops come with their designated pipes, it’s not a one-size-fits-all kind of situation. Here’s what you can do:
- Before buying your washing machine, check the water outlet pipe in your home and measure it so it’ll fit the washing machine pipe
- Check with your developer about the kitchen piping and if you require a special sink or a specific pipe before installing your sink & faucet
- If you’re using a gas stove, make sure to check with your gas man which pipe you should get. Failing to do so may result in an incredibly dangerous gas leak!
So before you head to the hardware store to purchase all your pipes, speak to your contractor beforehand to make sure you get the correct ones!
5. A functioning water purification system so you have clean, filtered water to drink!
While it may not be on the top of your priority list, there’s nothing more important in your new home than to have a water purifier! No, boiling tap water does not cut it!
A water purifier will filter and eliminate contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides and more which may be harmful to our bodies! Even though we may not realise it, we’re actually putting all those nasties in our bodies every time we drink unfiltered water ?
