Communication is key in any kind of relationship but sometimes, the situation renders it tough for us to be upfront about what we truly feel, especially with family members and ESPECIALLY when it involves money.
A post in the Facebook community Tanya Peguam has gained much attention online after a participant voiced out her concern about giving a copy of her IC and driver’s license to her mother, who said that she wanted it for insurance purposes and an officer at PERKESO was asking for a copy of all her family members’ IC.
The woman, however, was hesitant to trust her parents about finances.
“I’m traumatised but what I had to see growing up”
In the post, the woman admitted to not liking how her parents handled their money back then. They were stuck in debt and even after they had enough money to pay, they chose to focus on wants, not needs.
“They would spend on luruxy items, and even bought a used car with cash.”
According to her, the parents also gave a lot of sweet promises when they wanted to borrow cash from relatives when they couldn’t pay the bills. The worst thing was, that the woman had to experience fears when she was younger.
“The loan sharks always come to the house because my parents don’t pay their debts.”
Her mother also asks for extra cash every time, on top of the RM500 that the woman has given to her mum every month. The woman couldn’t help but wonder, is it PERKESO’s standard procedure to ask for copies of documents from each family member?
“Why would PERKESO want your driver’s license?”
Netizens, on the other hand, “got together” and advised the woman NOT to give her mum any documents at all. Some even suggested she follow her mum to the so-called PERKESO office.
“Driver’s license? Sounds like another car loan to me, in which a copy of IC and driver’s license will do. They’re probably aiming for another used car.”
“Don’t give anything. Tell your mum that you’re following her to the office.”
“I’m not so sure about it but based on your parents’ track record, you might want to avoid giving any documents to prevent major consequences.”
“A copy of your driver’s license might indicate your mum is making you her guarantor for a car loan. Be careful and avoid yourself from getting blacklisted.”
“Sounds fishy to me. PERKESO has never asked for a driver’s license.”
Being transparent is not easy all the time but if you’re looking to avoid troubles, it’s best to have the “harsh” talk to prevent yourself from another “heartbreak”.
