The Penampang district in Sabah is currently experiencing one of its worst floods in recent history, with floodwater level recorded at a staggering 10.05 metres on Sunday (30 June) night.
According to BERNAMA, residents are calling the flood the worst ever in the district’s history.
As of yesterday, 464 people from 140 families have been evacuated and housed in 4 relief centres, with the number of evacuees at the Penampang Cultural Hall increasing to 279 people from 93 families compared to 165 people from 67 families a day prior.
A Malaysian woman goes above and beyond to rescue stranded cats during Penampang flood
Amidst the chaos, a touching story emerged after a photo of a woman rescuing several cats on top of a tube float boat caught the attention of Malaysians.
In the photo, as shared by several individuals online, including by Tasha Nat on Facebook, the woman can be seen holding on tightly to 4 cats after going above and beyond to rescue the felines from the rising flood waters.
The selfless act touched on the heartstrings of Malaysians, who began to search for the identity of the woman.
These include Tasyah Tni from Pet Wellness, a grooming and cat care boarding centre based in Kota Kinabalu, who wanted to provide free grooming for the rescued cats.
The selfless woman was identified as Dr Phoebe
The kind woman has since been identified as Dr Phoebe, a dentist from the Dr Natasha Dental Clinic.
In the comments section of Tasyah Tni’s post, she revealed that she has since been in contact with Dr Phoebe to provide assistance.
Furthermore, many Malaysians praised Dr Phoebe in the comments for her kind actions.
One commenter said that she was touched seeing Dr Phoebe’s struggle to save the cats.
Meanwhile, several others prayed that Penampang residents, including the animals, would be safe throughout the natural disaster.
