Giving birth can be a stressful experience, especially if you are forced to do it in a car.

One local woman had to endure just that, but thankfully, there were other Malaysians around who were happy to assist her in her time of need.

LK Savantharaja shared an amazing story of how Thaipusam devotees, including himself, came to the aid of the woman (and her husband), who was giving birth in their car in front of Batu Caves yesterday morning.

He wrote, “Just now, myself and some devotees who came for prayers at Batu Caves Sri Subramaniyar Temple, saw one sister shouting for help beside a car outside of the temple. I immediately ran to the car and saw a Malay sister who wanted to give birth inside her car”.

He and the other devotees immediately jumped into action and used their veshti (traditional cloth wraps) to cover the car windows, to provide the woman with privacy.

“Immediately, me and some sisters closed the car windscreen with veshtis which were given by our brothers who were walking to the temple with Paal Kudams (milk offerings) to fulfill their vows”.

To comfort the woman, LK Savantharaja repeatedly told the woman, “Kakak, you and your baby are blessed“.

The woman ended up giving birth to a beautiful baby girl. LK Savantharaja then assisted by finding a knife that was given to them to cut the baby’s umbilical cord.

Everyone who came to give help wished (them well) and blessed both the mother and baby. The ambulance reached exactly after the baby came out. Before they left for the hospital, I took a selfie with the baby’s father, for memories”, he shared.

We don’t think we will ever get used to seeing how truly helpful and thoughtful Malaysians are when we stumble upon a fellow community member in need.

Not only does this make for a great story to tell the baby when she’s older, but it also helps strengthen the bonds we have with our brothers and sisters of different races.

We genuinely hope that the woman and her baby are doing well, and are healthy and happy!
