A community activist went above and beyond to identify and assist the family
The viral video has since caught the attention of Malaysian community activist and influencer Adrian Edy, who immediately searched for the individuals seen in the video to offer some assistance.
Taking to his Instagram account, Adrian shared that he managed to identify the father and daughter in the video as Pakcik Basri and his daughter, Putri Sarah from Kampung Bakau Baru in Lahad Datu.
Adrian then met up with the family to hear their story and gifted a new motorcycle to Pakcik Basri through funds raised from fellow Malaysians.
The community activist shared that Pakcik Basri is now 69 years old and used to work as an ice cream salesman for 11 years around Lahad Datu.
Sometimes, he only managed to garner RM30 to RM40 income a day and that is if he sold all of the ice creams. However, due to his deteriorating health, Pakcik Basri had to stop working.
Adrian added that Pakcik Basri has 10 children and he sends 7-year-old Putri Sarah to school every day using the modified bicycle, with the distance from their home to school being 20 minutes.
The family doesn’t have a car and if they want to go to the city, they have to hitch a ride.
Adrian also managed to check on Pakcik Basri’s modified bicycle, praising him for the creative way he used dustbins as makeshift storage and seats. There’s also a fabric cover which he uses when it’s raining.
As for the new motorcycle gift, Adrian said Pakcik Basri was surprised at receiving it but was thankful for those who contributed, saying that it’s a blessing for his daughter.
Adrian added that they also gifted the family some pocket money and food stock.
