Deputy Fire Department Officer (PBK) II Dr-Rosdi Mat Yusoff from Sungai Petani, Kedah, has raised a lot of eyebrows over the years due to his unique first name.
“Many get confused about my name to the point that some even mistake me for a doctor when I am actually a fireman,” Dr-Rosdi told Harian Metro.
48-year-old Dr-Rosdi stated he initially felt uncomfortable when his friends began calling him “Doctor”, but is now used to the unusual name.

According to the fireman, his late father told him that he was initially meant to be named Mohd Rosdi. However, there was a mistake when his name was first registered.
“Back then, there was a famous movie called ‘Dr. Rushdi‘ starring the late Tan Sri P Ramlee. Maybe my name was mistakenly registered because the person in charge of this was thinking about that movie,” he continued.
“Whatever it is, I have a unique name that makes it very easy for others to remember.”
However, Dr-Rosdi mentioned he usually causes a bit of confusion when he receives treatment at a hospital or clinic, as staff usually presume he works as a doctor and ask him what hospital or clinic he is based in. He, however, clarifies to the staff that the ‘Doctor’ is just a part of his name and not a title reflecting his occupation.

“My friends and colleagues at the Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in Kedah also call me ‘Doctor’ because it’s easier to remember.”
“Whenever a new recruit joins us here, they’re usually surprised to find out that there’s a ‘doctor’ working in the fire department. However, they soon find out the real story behind it.”
While Dr-Rosdi does appreciate his unique name, he did not pass it down to his four children, aged between 8 and 21 years old.
