Even though we may have a multitude of streaming services that we can use, sometimes the plain ol’ TV is still the best.
Over the years, many have turned to buying Android TV boxes as they contain lots of content in different languages and they only need to pay once, unlike monthly streaming services.
According to a BERNAMA report, the police have detained a 29-year-old Malaysian woman for selling “illegal streaming services.”
It is said that the woman was picked up on 17 August at a business outlet in Puchong where she was selling Android TV boxes which contain illegal Astro subscription services.
Bukit Aman Commercial CID director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said,
“The operation which was also participated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Astro also succeeded in confiscating six units of SVI 9S brand android boxes which did not have SIRIM certification, RM500,000 cash and a purchase receipt.”
He added that this is the work of a syndicate and “copies of Astro broadcast would only be downloaded to each device sold to customers at RM468.”
The Bukit Aman Commercial CID director said that this case is currently being investigated under Section 43AA of the Copyright Act 1987 which stipulates a fine of less than RM200,000 or a maximum jail term of 20 years or both if found guilty.
The police have also urged members of the public to not sell or buy these illegal devices and services.
