Many people rely on public transportation such as buses to safely get them to their destinations.
But, that doesn’t include running red lights and colliding with other people’s vehicles.
Netizen, Skylar Lee, took to her Instagram account to showcase how a bus had run a red light at Jalan Tun Perak, Kuala Lumpur and had hit her and her boyfriend’s brand new car in the process. What makes this worse is that the bus driver didn’t even stop to access the situation.
She wrote, “On November 12, 2023 (Sunday), while waiting at a traffic light on Jalan Tun Perak in Kuala Lumpur, my boyfriend and I were struck by a public bus that ran the red light, causing severe damage to the left front corner of our newly purchased car.”
“Shockingly, the bus driver chose to flee the scene, neglecting to stop and address the accident.”
Not only did they have dashboard camera footage of the incident, but they also filed a police report and reached out to the bus company’s customer service department in regards to this.
“In truth, the moment of impact was sudden. We heard the collision and felt the vehicle shake. For a few seconds, we were bewildered. Fortunately, a helpful uncle who witnessed the incident informed us that the bus had run the red light and collided with our car, prompting us to quickly take photos and report to the police.”
“At the police station, we provided evidence from our dashcam footage, confirming the sequence of events.”
In the dashcam footage, a piece of their bumper could even be seen stuck to the bus where the collision took place.
Despite the damning evidence, they had to foot to costs of repairs.
Due to some unspoken rule, they apparently couldn’t claim the bus company’s insurance and were forced to cover the costs of the repairs to their car themselves.
“On the same day, we immediately contacted (the bus company’s) customer service and provided the police report, photos and the video footage of the incident. However, as of today, February 2, 2024 (Friday), the company has yet to provide a reasonable explanation for the incident.”
“What’s even more troubling is that the police and insurance companies informed us that we cannot claim any insurance compensation from the bus company and must apply for repair costs through our own car insurance. The repair costs amounted to RM5,542.96. Additionally, we lost our first year’s No Claims Discount (NCD) and had to pay a high premium for the first year’s car insurance again. It’s truly an expensive lesson,” she explained.
Baffled by the whole insurance situation, Skylar chose to share about this to ensure that others are aware that this can happen.
“Is this some kind of unfair ‘unwritten rule’? This unfair situation has left us feeling extremely helpless and frustrated. I hope sharing this experience will help more drivers to understand the inexplicable ‘traffic rules’ out there. There are many traps on the road, so please be careful,” she added.
