Now, it’s no secret that us Malaysians really love our local food, which is why we get extra excited when we see local dishes getting highlighted overseas.
And that excitement only multiplies when we see a Caucasian person knowing how to honour Malaysian food by eating them with their hand!
The +99 TikTok page recently shared a clip from season 14 of Masterchef Australia, where Kuala Lumpur-born contestant, Alvin Quah, made Nasi Lemak and judge Andy Allen decided to use his hands to devour the dish!
+99 wrote, “Even the judge knows to follow our style, which is ‘using your hands’ to eat will make it more tasty!”
In the video, the judges could be seen first having a chat with Alvin while he prepares the Nasi Lemak.
“What’s cooking?” one of the judges asked.
“Nasi Lemak. If I eat this, I feel like I’m at the roadside again, with that Malaysian coffee. (I’ve) got the Rendang Daging (beef Rendang), I’ve got the Nasi Lemak done, I’ve got some peanuts and anchovies. I’ve got some pickled cucumber and I’m just working on my eggs,”
“And if it’s possible for me to get you guys to eat with your hands, I will,” Alvin said.
The next clip then shows the judges being presented with the Nasi Lemak for their tasting session, where judge Andy Allen could be seen immediately digging in with his hand.
“To me, if you wanted an example of how a Nasi Lemak should works, that’s it,” guest judge, Rich Stein said in regards to Alvin’s dish.
“It’s really good,” Andy added, as he continued to eat with his hand while another judge looked at him in amusement. At that point, it’s obvious that there was only one thing on Andy’s mind. Nasi Lemak.
