Snakes are among the most dangerous predators anyone or any animal can encounter out there. Their presence alone can create intimidation to those animals that belong in the reptile’s food chains.
Cats are no doubt on the menu for snakes, and how a local actor recently “introduced” a python to his felines caused an uproar among many Malaysians. The actor, Aaron Aziz uploaded a short clip on his Instagram last night (8 May), where he is seen showing the python towards the camera during a shooting.
If you noticed, he looks pale in some parts of the video, and Aaron revealed that it was simply a cosmetic effect for a scene where he is “choked” by the python. He also did a TikTok live to interact with the audience where he was seen resting the python on a cage with cats in it.
Netizens were not the only ones unhappy with his act as the Malaysian Animal Association (MAA) also condemned the act, and they had a stern reminder for Aaron.
When predator meets prey
In an Instagram post this morning (May 9), MAA said that the presence of the reptile, despite not entering the cage is enough to cause fear and panic among the cats.
“The cats can be and get traumatised when they feel threatened around the predator,” MAA explained.
MAA then told Aaron Aziz about the Animal Welfare Act that the actor might not be aware of, which protects domestic animals such as cats from being exposed to danger. In 1 of the 5 elements of Animal Welfare, one should avoid pets from extreme fear and danger.
However, that was not the only act of Animal Welfare that Malaysia practices. MAA then mentioned The Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.
“It states that one should have a license to own a wild animal such as a python. This includes holding public performances or screenings with wild animals either on the streets or on social media.”
MAA then reminded everyone that the acts on Animal Welfare are there to ensure the safety and welfare of the pets.
“Aaron Aziz, you’re advised to be more careful & sensitive when handling your social media if it involves domestic and wild animals. Hopefully, history will not repeat itself again.”
At the time of writing, Aaron has yet to respond to the matter, despite major criticisms online.
This reminder goes out to everyone out there! Like human beings, animals have feelings and they, too, are fearful when being under the radar of predators.
