Former Prime Minister Najib Razak is behind bars, but his trial is far from over, and he still has massive debts.
In the Parliament recently, the Ministry of Finance revealed that Najib still owes LHDN a whopping RM1.7 million.
“He has yet to clear the income tax of almost RM1.7 billion.”
MOF said the matter has not been resolved, and the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has taken appropriate action.
“Proceedings are still ongoing and the next hearing is scheduled for 29 July 2024 at the Insolvency High Court in Kuala Lumpur.”
The ministry answered RSN Rayer’s question in a Parliamentary written response. Rayer asked the MOF to state whether Najib has cleared the income tax arrears of RM1.7 billion owed to LHDN.
On 16 October 2023, the Federal Court ruled that Najib must pay RM1.69 billion in unpaid taxes after rejecting his appeal to overturn the High Court’s decision against him.
Through the IRB, the government filed a suit against Najib on 25 June 2019, asking him to pay unpaid taxes with 5 percent interest per annum from the date of judgment, as well as costs and other relief the government deems appropriate.
