On 21 December, the Malaysian Meteorological Department uploaded a statement on their Facebook page to warn the inhabitants of Northern Peninsular Malaysia.
In the statement, they mentioned that the department has observed a tropical depression (tropical cyclone) in the northern waters of Sumatera and it is moving towards the northern states of peninsular Malaysia.

They added that this phenomenon can cause continuous rain and strong winds in the northern states and the lower level areas in those states might be at risk of flooding.
So, the Meteorological department has issued a warning for continuous rain that will last the whole day (21 December) at these places:
- Perlis;
- Kedah;
- Penang; &
- Perak (Kerian & Larut, Matang & Selama).
In a separate older statement issued on 20 December, the department mentioned that the tropical depression phenomenon can cause thunderstorms and squall lines in the northern peninsular states on both 21 & 22 December.
“Members of the public are advised to be more alert and careful.”
Malaysians share that it is starting to get cloudy
In the comments, netizens say that their areas are getting cloudy with incoming rain while there are other areas where the rain has stopped.
MET Malaysia assures that they are monitoring the situation and the people should keep an eye out for updates.
