If animals at a zoo managed to escape or go missing, there would normally be reports of it on the news, telling the general public to look out for the furry, scaly or feathery creature that broke out.
Yet, there appears to be nothing on the alleged 150 parrots and a white lion that went missing from the Melaka Zoo after they were purchased in December 2020 and April 2021 for RM12,000 and RM60,000 respectively.
Ayer Keroh state assemblyperson Kerk Chee Yee brought this issue up recently at th1e Melaka state legislative assembly, and took to his TikTok account to share a clip of the session.
He wrote, “Melaka State Assembly session highlight 1/4, Melaka Zoo animals are missing?”
He brought up the incident to the Melaka State Assembly due to a recent report by Sin Chew Daily as well as it being mentioned in the 2022 Auditor-General’s Report, which was released last week (November 22).
“Based on the media report, the audit search shows that there is no evidence or documentation that shows the receival of these purchased animals, and at the same time, there is no report of loss. When the auditor visited the zoo and asked the staff (about this incident), they said that the cages were damaged so the 150 birds had disappeared.”
“If this is just a documentation issue or a technical issue, I hope that the State Government can provide answers not only to the Auditor-General, but also to the people of Melaka. Because, this is a serious issue.”
He went on to ask the government to take action should this issue involve corruption.
“But, if this involves an element of bribery, an element of breach of trust, I believe appropriate action needs to be taken by the government to uphold the integrity and accountability of our State Government,” he added.
