The Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) has revealed that it is planning to introduce the use of mechanical parking in the Banda Hilir area for public convenience. Furthermore, this initiative is also touted to ease the implementation of the Vehicle Free Zone every Saturday there.
As reported by BERNAMA, MBMB Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman asserted that the proposal is currently being studied, including looking for suitable locations to develop the parking system which uses multi-storey mobile parking technology. He added that the initiative is also aimed at increasing the number of parking spaces in the Banda Hilir area.
Shadan said,
“Although the public has several other parking sites as an alternatives such as at the Rural Transformation Center (UTC) and Taman Rempah, or to take a water taxi to Banda Hilir, this initiative to introduce mechanical parking is aimed at increasing the number of parking spaces in the Banda Hilir area,”
Besides that, Shadan also commented on the aforementioned Vehicle Free Zone initiative, saying that it has received positive responses from the public. In fact, many are even calling for the Vehicle Free Zone to be implemented on a few other days and not just on Saturdays.
Moroever, based on the ‘crowd monitoring system’ installed at the Clock Tower at the Stadthuys building, Banda Hilir recorded more than 12,000 visitors every Saturday thanks to the Vehicle Free Zone initiative.
