Local film Mechamato Movie is making history by becoming the first Malaysian animated film to be screened in Japanese theatres across the country!
The official Facebook account for the Mechamato series, which is produced by the Malaysian animation studio Monsta, shared the official trailer for the movie in Japan, which is dubbed in the Japanese language for its release there.
In the post’s caption, Mechamato asserted,
“Mechamato Movie makes history! Film #aniMY number 1 becomes the FIRST to break through the silver screen in Japan!”

Mechamato Movie was released in Malaysia back in 2022 to critical and commercial success, garnering praise from critics and collecting over RM36 million from the Malaysian box office!
Monsta is now aiming to replicate the success in Japan, with the movie being released in the country in collaboration with AEON Entertainment Japan.
In Japan, the Mechamato Movie features a star-studded cast of famous Japanese voice actors, including Ayumu Murase as Amato, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as MechaBot and Kenjiro Tsuda as General Grakakus.
A special Gala Premiere was held at AEON Chofu in Tokyo on Sunday (14 January), where many fans of the series in Japan attended, with Mechamato’s official Facebook page sharing a video of the crowd during the event below:
Furthermore, the official Facebook page also shared several screenshots of the Japanese audience praising the Mechamato Movie after seeing it during the premiere event.
In various comments sections pertaining to the Mechamato Movie’s release in Japanese theatres, many Malaysians and even foreigners expressed their pride at the animated film’s success in breaking into the Japanese silver screen.
In the comments section of the Mechamato Facebook page, one commenter said that the series is the best for putting Malaysia in the eyes of the world.
Whereas another commenter joked about how the tables have turned, whereby Malaysians previously got excited seeing Japanese animation and now the Japanese are excited about seeing Malaysian animation.
Meanwhile, on the Mechamato Movie Japanese trailer on YouTube, a Malaysian commented that he’s proud of being a Malaysian and with local animation thanks to Monsta’s success.
Besides that, there are several Indonesians in the comments section as well who praised Monsta for the Mechamato Movie and said that they’re proud of a fellow neighbouring country’s animation industry making it big internationally.
Awesome! Mechamato Movie will be screened in over 30 cinemas across Japan starting this Friday (19 January).
