It’s no secret that Malaysia is riddled with Mat Rempits, motorcyclists who race and perform dangerous stunts on public roads that can endanger the lives of other road users.

But what exactly is the authorities doing about it?

The 我们是马来西亚人 We are Malaysians Facebook page recently shared a series of videos showcasing hundreds of motorcyclists gathering outside a toll booth on the Mex Highway yesterday night (September 7).

In the series of videos, the massive group of motorcyclists could be heard loudly revving their engines, causing major sound pollution to those residing nearby.

But, that’s not all.

In another post shared by the Inforoadblock Facebook page, the motorcyclists could also be seen riding against traffic on the same highway, at the same time.

Seeing such unruly behaviour from the motorcyclists, netizens took to social media to question why the authorities were not taking immediate action against them. In fact, in one of the videos, a police car could even be seen passing by the gathering.

“Did the toll operator not make a report to PDRM and JPJ about this? An extraordinary situation like this or like what happens in Penang? Keluarga Malaysia gathering but not social distancing.”

“No enforcement, no hefty fines, no control. Where is the JPJ and PDRM? Not one time, more than a hundred over times. Transport Minister, where are you?”

Mex 5

“Are the highway auxiliary police sleeping?”

While the Road Transport Department (JPJ) announced that they will be considering harsher punishments for Mat Rempits back in July, nothing has since been set in stone.

We genuinely hope that the authorities will finally recognise the dangers these motorcyclists pose to themselves and others on the road, and take the appropriate action to prevent activities like this from taking place.
