On Valentine’s day, a poor lady was brutally beaten and mugged at an MRT station in Cheras. Right after that, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng offered RM10,000 as a reward for any information which can lead to the arrest of the robber.
Following that, a recent update on the case revealed that the perpetrator has finally been arrested by the police. Thank goodness.
According to The Malay Mail, the 26-year-old suspect who is a local was nabbed in Taman Cheras at 8.10pm on 18 February 2019. The man was apprehended by the Serious Crime Investigation Department (D9) team from Cheras’ district police headquarters.
As of now, the case will be investigated under “Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt in a robbery”. If he is found guilty, he could face a jail term of up to 20 years as well as a fine and whipping.
Earlier on the same day, City police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim shared that the police had identified the suspect. Apparently, the thief had also robbed a convenience store near the MRT station at about 6.30am, which was 15 minutes before he robbed the 48-year-old lady.
Meanwhile, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad had taken several precautions to ensure that an incident like this doesn’t happen again. Good call!
Amongst the initiatives they have taken are:
- They will display recordings from inside the lifts to the staff on duty so that they will immediately know if a bad incident were to happen.
- They have increased the number of Special Action Taskforce (SAT) members in hot spot areas.
FYI, SAT is a special unit team which was set up by Prasarana’s security department. They are usually dressed in normal clothes when they are on patrol duty.
Well, it’s great that the suspect has been caught and we hope that he will be convicted accordingly if found guilty. That said, kudos to the police for a job well done!
