Durian season is upon us, and that means the hantu durian are out in full force. Hungry for any taste of the delectably stinky king of fruits, these individuals can be seen indulging themselves at durian buffets all across the nation. It’s totally understandable why some people are crazy about the fruit, and with prices being as high as they are right now, perhaps it’s no surprise this man went to criminal lengths to obtain some durian.
A night-bazaar worker was arrested by the police and put in jail for a night after pleading guilty of the charges of stealing musang king durians from a Shah Alam shopping mall earlier this month, Sinar Harian reports.
The thief, identified as Luqman Hakim Yusof, was sentenced to a night in jail and ordered to a pay a fine of RM1,000 by Magistrate Rini Triany Muhamad Ali. Based on the accusations, Luqman Hakim Yusof plead guilty for stealing five packets of musang king durians from the Section 13 AEON Supermarket, which are worth RM400 in total.
The charges were filed under Section 380 of the Penal Code with the possibility of imprisonment up to 10 years or being fined or both.
Initially, the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Khairul Aisamuddin Abdul Rahman sought for the court to serve a heavy sentence to the accused, in hopes of teaching him a lesson.
However, the lawyer representing Luqman Hakim, Salahuddin Salam, appealed for a lighter sentence because the accused expressed regret for his act.
Well, Luqman better thank his lawyer for making sure he didn’t spend too much time in jail! Remember guys, durian may be tasty, but it’s definitely not worth jail time.
