For most people, finding love means to spend hours and hours trying to get their crush to like them back.

But, for others, it’s a matter of mystical intervention.

Malaysians are currently promoting and selling ‘love potions’ in the form of ‘buluh perindu‘ or ‘longing reeds’ on TikTok, that can be infused into perfumes to ‘enchant’ people into being attracted towards the person who wears it.

“I infused 3 strings (of buluh perindu) into my perfume and wore it as usual. My husband who was angry suddenly inviting me to go eat KFC.”

Not only do people allegedly utilise this ‘buluh perindu‘ perfume to ‘lure’ their crushes or potential partners, they also apparently use it to attract customers to their businesses.

“I infused 3 (strings of buluh perindu) into my perfume and I tried it. I do feel like there are more people who are coming to my stall.”

According to the Mufti of Federal Territory’s Office, this reed that comes from a bamboo is actually used to make flutes due to it’s sweet sound.

Buluh perindu or its scientific name, Bambusa Magica, is a type of tiny bamboo that produces a sweet sound when blown by the wind. So, buluh perindu is always used as the flute. Besides, there is a Malay saying “Seperti bangsi buluh perindu” which means a sweet and soft voice,” they explained.

And while it is okay for these bamboos to be sold as flutes, selling it with the purpose of attracting people is actually illegal!

“It is haram (forbidden) to sell buluh perindu online or even traditionally if the bamboo is used for the purpose of shirk (enchantment) like as an amulet. However, if the bamboo is sold for other purposes like to make flutes or ornaments, then it is permissible,” they added.

Hence, if you’re thinking of purchasing ‘buluh perindu‘ in hopes of using it to get your crush to like you, maybe don’t because you don’t want to get caught up in such forbidden sales.

Have you tried ‘buluh perindu’ before? Do feel free to share your experiences in the comment section.
