There have been lots of instances where our competitive streak with our neighbours Singapore has reared its head, especially when it concerns food and exchange rates. Recently, a tweet that started off another one of these debates went viral, leading to Malaysians and Singaporean drawing virtual battle lines all over the internet. Here’s the tweet:
The tweet was posted on 29th August, and has garnered about 4.7k retweets – and it has, without a doubt, caused a big buzz on Twitter.
Before we get on to the arguments, let’s all take a look at this man’s bio first which says, “Trust me but not my tweets.”
Okay so let’s get on to it!
Malaysians, in general, gave the nod to the original poster, opining that what the user said was brilliant and is a smart move. Hmmmmmm…
However, Singaporeans are a bit offended by the tweet. Some replied to the tweet nicely and said that this doesn’t have any benefit when it comes in maintaining good relations between the 2 countries, which see a lot of travel between each other despite the friendly rivalry.
Then there are those who decided to go on the offense by insulting the Twitter user’s face.
There were also some Singaporeans who thought that the tweet was funny, to whom the user actually replied to. In this tweet above, the user clarified that the original tweet was just a joke between two parties who have always made fun of each other and there was no disrespect meant.
We reached out to the Twitter user, and he told WORLD OF BUZZ that his tweets were never serious and nobody should believe them.
He also told us that as Merdeka was nearing, he thought he’d say something that most Malaysians could relate to regardless of background. He chose Singapore because our countries always make fun of each other, and he appreciates good jokes from Singaporeans about us Malaysians as well. He did not expect the tweet to blow up the way it did, but that’s the internet for you sometimes.
So, that’s the end of this saga. What do you think about this? Tell us in the comments below!
